Wailua Falls is a picturesque, yet very easily accessible waterfall visible from The Hana Highway. You don't even need to get out of your car to see it!
Located just past mile marker #45 on Honolewa Stream (not Wailua Stream), we highly recommend a stop at Wailua Falls, touted Maui's 'most photographed waterfall'. While you may be at the point in the drive where another waterfall is about as novel as a tree branch, this is one is so beautiful and refreshing that it's almost impossible to pass up.
Cascading approximately 80 feet down the side of a lush jungle wall into to a lovely plunge pool, this is easily one of Maui's most accessible and majestic falls. No hiking required!
Before you arrive, be sure to stop at nearby attractions like Koki Beach and Hamoa Beach to relax in the sand and sun, and continue on beyond this point to reach the amazing Seven Sacred Pools (aka 'Ohe'o Gulch) at Kipahulu, Haleakala National Park, site of Maui's most famous bamboo forest and much more.
As you're driving, you'll be alerted to your arrival at Wailua Falls in many ways - first off, you can easily spot it from the road! In addition, there's an ample parking area, plenty of local vendors, and typically a crowd of people. And if you're lucky, even the odd pig or two crossing the pathway!
Take time to browse the items and talk story with local vendors, including Auntie Sharon, Maui's ultimate Elvis fan and proud owner of an Elvis-themed Firebird! This is an excellent place to stock up on snacks and Maui souvenirs before your journey back.
While most people tend to stick to the roadway, we definitely recommend the quick (and sometimes slippery - be careful!) walk down to the plunge pool, where you can jump in to enjoy a refreshing swim, amazing views, and tranquility of your surroundings.
Enjoy Maui's Wailua Falls, and be sure to save some energy for the sites at Kipahulu coming up shortly!
