Kuau Store

Along Maui’s north shore, just east of the always charming Paia Town, lies the cozy neighborhood of Kuau. While most people zoom by this area on their way to explore attractions along the Road to Hana, we recommend stopping for a quick photo session and goodies from the newly opened Kuau Store (see there Instagram account for updates).

There are many picturesque surfboard fences on Maui, but this is the easiest to find and snap a photo of without the worry of invading someone’s private property. The surfboards are held together with wire and act as a protective fence for the house. It was said that this idea originated as a way to secure boards from the winds of an oncoming hurricane.

Make a pit stop next door at Kuau Store for a delicious plate lunch, morning coffee drink, locally made snacks, or even a to-go picnic lunch to enjoy later along your Hana adventure. This is the last place to stock up on food and drinks before beginning the Road to Hana.

The surfboard fence has become a favorite spot for visitors from around the world to start their day before exploring waterfalls or taking on the waves and wind at nearby Ho’okipa Beach Park, so make sure to stop by and get a glimpse of the fence and shark mural. When driving east along Kaupakalua Road, pass Paia Town and you will see the fence on your left hand side about a mile down the road. Surfboard Fence photos by Angelina Hills Photography.
