As you wind around Hana Highway, you might catch a glance of Hamoa's stunning crescent-shaped beach lined with Hala trees if you know where to look. With this guide, you'll be well-prepared for Hamoa Beach and all its adventurous beauty!
This stunning beach comes with the added perk of public bathrooms and showers, which is a luxury most Maui beaches don't come with. There is also a foot washing station at the base of the paved path up to your car to keep the sand out of your rental car. There is also plenty of shady pockets along the beach to keep any sunburns at bay. There are no lifeguards on duty, so you're responsible for the safety of your family and yourself!
The sand at Hamoa Beach is what dreams are made of. This silky sand runs into the ocean, which means you won't be walking on volcanic rock or knife-sharp coral. Always keep an eye out for a few stray pieces, as the tide can bring in a multitude of surprises. Because there is so little development here, the water is almost always pristine and sparkling.
Hamoa isn't protected by outlying reefs, which means the surf can change from mellow to severe pretty quickly when a swell comes in. While this beach is family friendly, always keep an eye on your kids and family members that aren't comfortable swimmers. The winter months bring in a bigger swell, so make sure to take that into account before planning your beach day. If you are an experienced ocean swimmer, the bodysurfing is excellent here!
Hamoa Beach has street parking available, but make sure to look for any street signs that dictate where you can park. The path down to the beach is very steep, which may limit some people from getting down to the beach.
We recognize the use of diacritical markings of the (modern) Hawaiian language including the ʻokina [ʻ] or glottal stop and the kahakō [ō] or macron (e.g., in place names of Hawaiʻi such as Lānaʻi). However, you may notice these diacritical markings have been omitted on some parts of this website to ensure the best online experience for our visitors. We recognizes the importance of using these markings to preserve the language and culture of Hawaii and respectfully uses them in all communications beyond the online platform.
